How Choosing the Right Font Transformed My Small Business Brand

When I first started my small candle-making business, I focused on the scent blends, wax quality, and eco-friendly packaging. But I kept getting the same question: “Is this a new brand? I’ve seen something like this before.” That’s when I realized my candles looked great, but my branding didn’t stand out. The final touch I was missing wasn’t another label material or a fancier box — it was typography.

I had been using a basic script font for my labels and social media posts, just because it came pre-installed on my design software. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon Design that I saw how a single font could elevate my entire brand identity.

What Makes Design Different

Design is a clean, elegant handwritten font with a modern twist. It’s not overly decorative like some script fonts, but still carries that personal, approachable feel. What stood out to me was its balance — it looks polished enough for a boutique shop, but warm enough for a handmade brand.

I chose it for my candle jar labels and Instagram story headers, and the difference was immediate. My visuals felt more cohesive, and customers began recognizing my brand even without the logo. That’s the power of good typography — it doesn’t just say what you sell, it says something about how you sell it.

Where Design Works Best

Since Design is a Script Amp font, it’s perfect for short text that needs to stand out — think product names, packaging titles, logo signatures, and headlines. I use it for my candle names on labels and for social media captions that need a bit of flair.

It also pairs beautifully with clean sans serif fonts for body text. I use it for headlines on my website banners and then switch to a simple sans serif for the rest of the content. This contrast helps guide the eye and makes the information easier to digest.

Improving Brand Recognition

Before switching to Design, I had inconsistent fonts across my packaging, social media, and email templates. Now, I use the same font family across all materials — from thank-you cards to digital ads — and my brand feels more put together.

It’s amazing how many small business owners overlook this. Typography is part of your brand voice. When I updated my candle labels and Instagram templates to use Design, I noticed more engagement and even more repeat customers. People started associating that elegant, approachable look with my brand.

Readability Tips for Real-World Use

One thing I learned the hard way: not all beautiful fonts work well at small sizes. I had to adjust the spacing and sometimes reduce the number of characters on my candle jar labels to make sure the text stayed legible.

If you’re using Design for packaging or small stickers, test it at actual size before printing. On mobile screens, I keep the text short and avoid long paragraphs. For printed materials like menus or flyers, I always check the font weight and ensure it’s bold enough to read from a distance.

Font Pairing Made Easy

Pairing fonts used to intimidate me. But with Design, it’s surprisingly simple. Since it’s a handwritten script font, I pair it with either a clean sans serif like Montserrat or a soft serif like Playfair Display. This gives my brand a balanced look — elegant but not stuffy, modern but still warm.

For example, I use Design for the candle names and a sans serif for the scent description. On social media, I use it for quote headers and pair it with a simple font for the caption underneath. It helps create visual hierarchy without complicating the layout.

Checking Licensing and File Formats

Before using any font in your business materials — especially if you’re selling physical or digital products — always check the licensing. I made sure Design included a commercial use license so I could safely use it on packaging, product mockups, and digital downloads.

I also checked the file formats included. The font came in both OTF and TTF, which worked across all my design tools. Some versions had ligatures and alternate characters, which I found useful for customizing the look of my logo and special edition labels.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Switching to Design didn’t require a full brand overhaul, but it made everything feel more intentional. My packaging looked cleaner, my social media feed felt more cohesive, and my business cards finally matched the quality of the products I sold.

Typography might not be the first thing you think of when building your brand, but it’s one of the most accessible ways to improve your visuals. Whether you’re updating your product labels, designing a new menu, or creating social media templates, choosing a font like Design can help your business feel more polished, professional, and memorable — without needing a graphic design degree.
